Fresh for Spring: A Girl’s Bedroom Redesign

I'm Paula

A former Kindergarten teacher/part-time home flipper turned CEO – having traded my love for the classroom for my love of beautiful spaces!

Now a surface specialist, design lover, and the founder of Iron River Surfaces – my combined passions for beautiful finishes and education merge together in our little blog as the team and I share helpful tips, design trends, inspirational ideas, and a little bit about ourselves along the way!

Thank you for joining us, we’re so glad you’re here!
Learn more about our story.

hey there

It happens every day, but to us it NEVER gets old.  A house is sold and purchased, one family moves on to new adventures, a new family moves in.  And when they do,  it’s time for that family to make that new house their HOME.

And we are always so thrilled to play a part in one of these personalized home transformations!

Making the Space Her Own

Just as every family has their own unique style and vibe, so do the individual members within that family!

And what fun it was working together with the 8 year-old inhabitant of this pretty girl’s room as we completed the surfaces of her space!  In preparation for moving into her new west-facing bedroom, she had a vision for something bright, colorful and inspiring (those same words could definitely be used to describe HER!), while the flow and continuity of the rest of the home’s design would require her to maintain some cohesiveness with the overall home’s design.

ALL of the surfaces of this space were ultimately addressed (and just in time for spring!) and we can’t wait to fill you in on the details of our scope!  But first, take a moment to absorb the BEFORE shot of this room.

Although comfortable and functional, the room lacked personality and it felt a tad dark – definitely not the feeling its new resident was hoping for.  So here’s what we did on our end!

WALLS

At Iron River River Surfaces, our scope includes all of those surface areas of your home that form the backdrop for living – the floors, wall features, etc..  And in this space the walls were the first thing that were changed.

It started with the room being primed and painted a bright fresh white (Benjamin Moore’s Simply White) in advance and in preparation for the arrival of one of our favorite Iron River wall murals!  This GORGEOUS mural is from one of our fave Canadian and female-owned suppliers, Anewall, and was made to order on a traditional non-pasted paper as per our wall dimension specifications, and then approved for scale.  The result: an awe-inspiring feature that adds color and vibrancy to the space!

Protip: Unless you have A LOT of experience hanging wallpaper, we always recommend having a professional do the job!  This mural consisted of 4 separate panels and our installers knocked it out of the park!  There’s not a seam to be seen!  And this installation was completed in only a few hours with no stress or mess to the family.

FLOORS

We say it every day, but it is worth repeating – the surfaces of your home must be beautiful, but they must also FUNCTION well for their intended use.  And that’s EXACTLY what these beautiful 7 ½” wide, white oak hardwood floors do for this little girl and her family!
Allergies and pets were a factor, so the old carpet was removed and Kentwood’s Bandon-engineered hardwood was installed throughout the main and second floors.  These floors are easy to clean, are sustainably sourced, are Greenguard certified, and are FABULOUS for dancing and playing on!  And the light natural tone wears beautifully and brightens the space immensely!

FINISHING DETAILS

Soft drapery panels, new lighting and hardware, and pops of yellow finish off this cheerful space.  We love a good before & after, and this transformation did not disappoint!
