In our free time as a family, there are few things our family would rather do than spend time in, on, or near water and in nature. Looking at our youngest daughter – full of promise, energy, and imagination – it’s crystal clear why we continue to choose wisely for a future that is greener, cleaner, and filled with hope. We want her, her siblings, and all future generations to enjoy the same incredible experiences we’ve been so fortunate to have in this beautiful province we call home, long after we’re gone.

“A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they know they shall never sit.” – Greek Proverb
That’s why we carry and support product lines that are responsibly sourced and sustainably manufactured. Each decision we make as a family and as a small business, no matter how big or seemingly insignificant, has the potential to leave a lasting impact for our children and yours.
With April 22 marking Earth Day this week, it’s the perfect moment to reflect on how our choices – especially in flooring – can positively impact the environment. So sit back, get cozy, and read on to learn more!
Understanding Sustainable Flooring Options
When it comes to flooring, the options can feel overwhelming. There are so many options to choose from, including one of the most popular choices on the market over the past decade – vinyl plank flooring. It has gained popularity for its affordability, wearability, and ease of installation. All wonderful features! However, it’s essential to understand that vinyl is made from PVC, a plastic material that can have significant environmental impacts during production and disposal. While it may seem like a convenient option, its long-term sustainability credentials are lacking so we always love educating clients on the alternatives so they can make the choice that is best for them.
Fortunately, there are several alternatives that offer both durability and eco-friendliness!
Cork Flooring
Cork is a fantastic option that is harvested from the bark of cork oak trees without harming them. This sustainable practice allows cork to regenerate, making it an eco-friendly choice. Additionally, cork is naturally resistant to mold, mildew, and pests, which is of course an added bonus for families! Its insulating properties also help maintain a comfortable home environment – and who doesn’t love a warm and cozy space to retreat to at the end of a long day?
Reclaimed Wood Flooring

Reclaimed wood is another beautiful and sustainable choice. By repurposing wood from old buildings or furniture, reclaimed wood gives new life to materials that would otherwise be discarded. This option not only adds character and warmth to any space but also contributes to a more sustainable future by reducing waste and the demand for new lumber.
Hardwood Floors
We take pride in offering hardwood flooring that meets LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards and is ethically harvested. Our wide selection also includes Canadian-made lines that are crafted to order, limiting waste and significantly lessening their carbon footprint during transport to us here in Alberta. This ensures that our hardwood options are not only beautiful but also environmentally responsible. And with proper care or refinishing, hardwood floors can last for generations, minimizing the need to replace and dispose of them as often as some other options.
Linoleum Flooring
Often confused with vinyl, linoleum is actually made from natural materials like linseed oil, cork dust, and wood flour. One standout option is Forbo’s Marmoleum (one of our favorite product line offerings here at Iron River Surfaces!), which is made from linseed oil sourced from flax grown only one province over in Saskatchewan, Canada! This sustainable product not only features a stunning array of colors and patterns but is also biodegradable and produced using renewable resources. Forbo practices a closed-loop production process, minimizing waste and ensuring that their linoleum has a minimal environmental footprint. By choosing Marmoleum, you’re not just opting for beautiful flooring but also supporting environmentally responsible agriculture and manufacturing practices.

Tile and Ultra Compact Surfaces
Tile is another excellent flooring option, particularly when sourced from sustainable manufacturers. Many tile producers utilize reclaimed water in their manufacturing processes and operate net-zero factories that minimize their environmental impact. Ultra compact surfaces, made from materials like porcelain and glass, are also highly durable and can be produced using eco-friendly practices. These surfaces are resistant to scratches, stains, and moisture, making them long lasting and ideal for busy family environments.

Eco-Friendly Carpets
When it comes to carpet, there are now several options that prioritize sustainability. Look for carpets made from recycled materials, such as PET (recycled plastic bottles), or those that use natural fibers like wool or jute. Some manufacturers also offer carpets produced with low-impact dyes and adhesives, reducing harmful emissions and promoting indoor air quality. And great news – all of these eco-friendly carpet options can be found at Iron River Surfaces!
