First off, full disclosure, WE LOVE COLOR here at Iron River Surfaces! A quick tour of our gallery would swiftly demonstrate just how much we love incorporating vibrant, deeply hued tones into spaces! However . . . .
We also recognize there is a time and place for these beautiful shades, and introducing color into a more semi-permanent investment piece such as tile is not always everyone’s preference. And there are so many reasons for maintaining a neutral color palette of white – first, it truly is a timeless look and an incredible backdrop for furnishings, fabrics, and accessories (there’s a reason art galleries have white painted walls!), and when considering future resale possibilities, a neutral color palette is sure to appeal to the masses. But fear not – as our heading reads: white does NOT need to be boring!
Basic white often gets a bad wrap — but its timeless and fresh quality can pack a lot of design punch when incorporating some of these impactful details!
➔ Pair with a dark hued CONTRASTING tile. This keeps the palette neutral while adding visual interest and allows the other elements within the space to pop.
➔ Lay a standard white rectangular tile in an interesting PATTERN — herringbone, basket weave, vertically offset etc! Anything but boring! And for increased drama, outline with a darker grout color.
➔ Consider selecting a white tile with a subtle artisan TEXTURE or FLUTING that will add dimension and visual interest without swaying away from a neutral palette.
➔ SHAPE — select one or mix and match a variety of white tile shapes of the same shade — hexagons, squares, pickets, penny rounds, diamonds — there are so many shape options!
Pair with pastels, highlight with wood, inlay with pattern or another material, play with shade variety and tone on tone patterns — the possibilities of a basic “white” tile are endless!
